Stay Healthy

May 24th, 2009

According to experts one way that the average person can cut down medical expenses is to make lifestyle changes that can help them stay healthier longer.

A recent study found that people with chronic diseases who participated in self-management and self-training were able to improve their health.

Lifestyle has a lot to do with many of the HEALTH issues we see in primary care on an average clinic day. The issues that we see that are lifestyle related are typically those related to obesity.

These include diabetes, heart disease, stroke, degenerative arthritis and certain cancers.

While people often concentrate on cutting fat from the diet, they also should look at other factors, such as refined sugars, specifically high-fructose corn syrup, as well as starches or carbohydrates.

Smoking is another lifestyle factor to consider.

In general, the cost of smoking both to the individual smoker and to our nation continues to rise. The number of health problems smokers’ face is significantly more than the nonsmoker. We’re talking bronchitis, pneumonia, asthma, emphysema, heart disease, stroke and numerous cancers.

One way to stay healthy is through exercise.

Diet is another lifestyle issue.
