Do The Math: The ‘War’ On Pot Is Largely A War Upon Young People

A new study out today estimates that one-third of US young people will be arrested or taken into custody for illegal or delinquent offenses (excluding arrests for minor traffic violations) by the age of 23.

Parents and non-parents alike might be shocked to learn a new study estimates that roughly 1 in 3 U.S. youths will be arrested for a non-traffic offense by age 23 a substantively higher proportion than predicted in the 1960s.

The study, posted online by the journal Pediatrics, shows that between about 25% to 41% of 23-year-olds have been arrested or taken into police custody at least once for a non-traffic offense.

World Aids Day: South Africa pioneer decries cut in global funding | Alex Duval Smith

A Belgian doctor who is credited with saving the lives of thousands of South African HIV patients has warned that Aids will make a comeback on the continent unless a crucial funding body, the Global Fund for Aids, Tuberculosis and Malaria gets more money.

Eric Goemaer, 58, whose charity Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) defied the South African government to lead pioneering programmes in the country as early as 1999, said the cancellation last week of the Global Fund’s 11th round of grants will turn back the clock in the battle against Aids.

SOUTH AFRICA: Activists urge change to patent laws

Ten years ago, the Doha Declaration allowed countries to circumvent patent rights to access life-saving medicines, particularly those used to treat HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria. However, the South African government has failed to take advantage of these provisions, and increasingly important TB medication and second- and third-line antiretrovirals (ARVs) remain out of reach, activists warn.
